I have always been interested in crazy colors for on the lips. With crazy colors I mean shades that are not that regular, e.g. red or pink. I had been eyeing the different shades by MDMflow for a long time, but never took that step, because they were not very budget-friendly.. and what if that shade looked horrible on me? Lucky for me, NYC has all kinds of crazy colors and only for a small price!
At the time of writing this review, I had actually not visited the NYX store in Ghent yet! Shame on me, but I simply did not find the right occasion to venture all the way out there. I knew I would get a chance to visit the NYX store in New York City, so I made the most of it. I bought four lipsticks from the Wicked Lippies collection (12 different shades) in #09 Risque, #10 Power, #11 Cold Hearted, #12 Envy. I also wanted to try out other shades, but I had a hard enough time managing to get these. Luckily there was one really friendly shop assistant who got me the lippies my heart desired the most!
The Wicked Lippies come in simple plastic bullets that remind me of Cien Lipsticks and E.L.F. lipsticks. It seems all the budget brands are opting for a similar inexpensive look! The bullet is black with a see-through middle so you can see the color without having to take the cap off. Personally I have no problem with that. It is a budget product, after all. The only downside to it is that not every cap comes off easily, and the bullet of #09 Risque keeps sliding down, so applying the product becomes a bit of a hassle. That I do not like.
All the 12 shades in the Wicked Lippies collection are very shimmery with a velvety finish and a metallic shine! You can clearly see this in swatches of the four lipsticks I bought. #09 Risque is a mermaid green color with with a cool shine. #10 Power is a warm pink-purple with a cool shine. #11 Cold Hearted is a dark-grey-kind-of-black lipstick (so different), and #12 Envy is a very cool blue. As a one-layered swatch these lipsticks seem to give off a lot of pigment and are pretty damn opaque.
The thing about budget makeup is that sometimes the products don't come in the most wonderful packages. Now I didn't have this problem with the other lipsticks, but #09 Risque had a bullet that keeps going down when I try to apply the lipstick, so I have to hold the bottom and top of the bullet so it won't happen. It is kind of annoying, but something one can expect with cheaper products. Still not cool, though. Other than that, the lipstick had to be built up on my lips because the swatch on my lips is not as pigmented as it was on my arm. Nevertheless, the end result is quite gorgeous (and way more teal than on my arm). Look at that metallic shine! Also, it matches perfectly with my Urban Decay Eye Pencil in Roach!
The most wearable lipstick of the four, #10 Power applies easily on the lips and gives off a lot of pigment immediately. I have no complaints whatsoever about this lipstick, except maybe the longevity of the pigment. All the lipsticks will not last throughout the day. The most you get is a good couple of hours, but since they are crazy shiny with a soft and creamy finish... I figured as much!
I tested #11 Cold Hearted last, and it had gotten darker, so the whole picture looks a bit darker, but it surprisingly is a wearable color! The application was easier than 09 and 12, but not as easy as 10, and the color applied pretty evenly over the lips. The lipstick feels extremely soft and comfortable on the lips, but it does come off easily.
Though the shade looks stunning, #12 Envy was actually the hardest to apply (evenly) on the lips. It took a lot of layers to get such an even and opaque shade! So the swatch on my arm is not a representation of how it will apply on your lips! The end result is the same, though.. or even better.
In general all four lipsticks feel extremely smooth and comfortable on the lips, but the durability of the shade will not last throughout the day. I have no problem with reapplying for a lipstick that is inexpensive and doesn't have a (semi)matte finish! Despite being crazy colors I find them to be quite wearable, and so I certainly look forward to wearing them more and more! Can I also point out that I am in love with metallics?! You can get the NYX Wicked Lippies at the NYX Store, Douglas, and other beauty shops for about $6.00 or €7! They are a great budget option if you want to play around with more unique shades! What do you think? Would you wear them?
