Book of Shadows Vol III by Urban Decay

You probably know by now that Urban Decay is found in stores in the Netherlands and can be bought online in Belgium! Yay. We have got easier access once again to the wonderful products by one of my favorite makeup brands! I am overjoyed.. but I have held back. I have not bought anything... yet!

Instead of buying something new.. I thought I would share something old(er) with you! This beauty (eye makeup) palette was my first contact with Urban Decay and I fell in love instantly. I remember standing in the Sephora with my boyfriend -we were looking for my Christmas gift- when I noticed the Urban Decay section. I opened the Book of Shadows 3 and magic happened. The coolest imageries of New York popped up and it looked so cool and urban.. Guess what I got for Christmas?

The Book of Shadows Vol III was part of the Book of Shadows collection, which is no longer being made.. perhaps you can find it online?! It comes in a rectangular black box with the writing "UD loves NYC". It has an urban feel to it, because the letters remind me a bit of graffiti and you see the streets of New York! When you open the box the images pop out, as seen below:

You can also slide the bottom out of the box and then the gorgeous eyeshadow shades appear with two 24/7 glide-on eye pencils and an eye primer potion in "Original", but I have finished that a long time ago. I will write a separate article about the primer potions! How cool is this design, though? How often do you come across a beauty palette with such a creative and fun design? I miss that in the current UD palettes a bit.. and every other palette out there! I always am so excited to play around with this palette.. and up until today the lights still work (yeah, the buildings give light)! But I do not open the top that often anymore.. only to show it off ;-)

Just as I have been careful not to waste the battery of the lights, I have also been careful not to use these shades too often or for silly things, because once it is gone.. it is gone. No more. Nada. So I am very prudent when it comes to my Book of Shadows palette! This palette was sold as a holiday edition and it came with 16 different eyeshadows varying in colors. It may seem like a bit of an expensive buy, but the value of all these products together outweigh the price when sold separately... so you get a great deal of value for a an even better price! Something I really love about the Urban Decay eyeshadow palettes.

The first eyeshadow is a matte black one, called "Perversion". What a name! You can rely on Urban Decay to come up with all kinds of interesting names for their products! It is not very deep, as you can see it becomes somewhat sheer towards the end, but this will be great for darkening looks or adding a crease. Then "Uzi" is a silver white eyeshadow with loads of sparkles. I love using this in my inner-V or over my lid, but with all the sparkling eyeshadows in this collection.. you can expect some fall out! I do not mind, though.. I mean, have you seen that color?! The deep green "Loaded" is such a special eyeshadow to me. I do not have another green like this.. there is just something magical to it. Maybe it is the metallic shimmer? On to another green that does not disappoint either: "Kush" is just as special.. just think about how you could combine such a lovely shade! There is something coolish or blueish to it? Or am I the only one who sees that? Another eyeshadow that is perfect in the inner-V or all over the lid is "Midnight Cowboy Rides Again" (Say what?!). It becomes a very soft pink shade on my skin tone that has bits of glitter in it. "Last Call" is a deep pink towards purple eyeshadow with a silver metallic shine to it. What a beauty! Then we are going even darker with "Rockstar": a dark purple with a cool shimmer as well. The shade "Money" looks nothing like money, because it is a more cool blue-silverish shade! There is something icy to it!

The last eight colors are just as different. "Haight" is a deep mermaid blue with a frosty finish. The golden "Maui Wowie" shines brightly with its golden glitters. Just think about the amount of beauty looks you can create here. There are so many options. A seemingly simple looking brown, "Smog" still looks beautiful. It has a frosty finish too.. oh, did you know.. this shade can be found in the Naked 1 palette! It is the eight eyeshadow in there and I have used it quite a lot. I love to wear this as a wash on my eye lids. Then we have "Bordello": a very soft violet-like shade that would work perfectly with the Naked 3 eyeshadow palette. I wear this shade very often: in the centre of my lid, in my inner-V, or on my lower lash line. The last blue shade is "Radium". It is a cool blue with a frosty finish (just look how cool it looks towards the end of the swatch). "Snatch" is another soft pink shade (like "Midnight Cowboy Rides Again"), but this one has more brown in it. "Suspect" is a pretty bronze shade with a cool finish, and that combination makes such a soft shade special! Last but not least, "Psychedelic Sister" is a crazy intense purple because it is very pigmented. I have used this shade a lot too! You only need a bit for a lot of color with Urban Decay

With all the swatches we have just looked at, one might forget there are two 24/7 glide-on eye pencils in there as well. "Zero" is a deep black eyeliner that gives off a lot of pigment. To me a black eye pencil such as this one is a classic. Then there is "Ransom", which is a cool violet purple shade (not as deep and dark purple as the last eyeshadow!) with some shimmer in there as well. The 24/7 glide-on eye pencils are very buttery in texture, which allow for easy (albeit messier) application.. and tend to give off a lot of pigment!

Here is a quick look that I made for you. I am wearing "Psychedelic Sister" in my crease, outer-V and on lower lash line, "Bordello" over my lid and lower lash line, and "Midnight Cowboy Rides Again" in my inner-V. The beauty of the Book of Shadows Vol III is that it contains a wide variety of eyeshadows that you can use sparingly, because they give off so much intense pigment! In the coming days, I will try to create a couple of beauty looks for you.. just to give you an inkling of the many ways you can go with this palette! Back when I bought the Book of Shadows Vol III, it was worth €50. If you think about it: you get 16 eyeshadows, two mini eye pencils and one primer potion. Now, that was a good buy! Do you have a Book of Shadows palette? Or something else that Urban Decay does not sell anymore?

  5. I don't like palettes that much, but I remember one of the first YT videos I ever watched was by Kandee Johnson reviewing a UD Palette and it was magic! The packaging, the colors, the fun!

  6. Wat een gave verpakking. Ik zal zelf niet snel van die felle kleuren gebruiken puur omdat ik gewoon niet overweg kan met oogschaduw.

  13. Hey Natasja, ahh Urban Decay: it has to be the brand that actually got me into eye makeup! My first piece was the Naked palette, and I discovered the amazing UDPP that way. Without it, I'd basically never be able to wear eye makeup! I don't think UD has released a Book of Shadows for a few years, but they still do big colorful palettes not too different from this one :)

  15. Oh I have this one! My gosh I almost forgot about it! Do you have the first one Alice in Wonderland? I so want to buy that one now. I wasn't into makeup back then and now I regret not getting it. LOL Even though the packaging is bulky and child-like but I still think it's such a fun concept. I wish UD had continued making these. I'd still keep buying every volume they come out with. :)

Thanks for the inspiration to do metallic purple eyes, too! Gorgeous!
