Bio Oil: for Dry Skin, Scars and Stretch Marks

Have you heard of Bio Oil already? It is marketed as the all-in-one skin product that will diminish both old and new scars, and can be used preventively and correctively on stretch marks. I mean, that sounds pretty amazing right? Am I convinced right away? Nah. I doubt there really are loads of products out there that will make your scars or stretch marks go away completely, but.. a little is more than nothing, right? So why not try it out!

Bio Oil was launched back in 2002, and has won hundreds awards over the years and has become a top selling product in 18 countries for treating scars and stretch marks. I mean, that still sounds quite promising, right?! It is an oil, so I expect it to work well on dry skin too. It comes in a see-through plastic bottle with a white cap and the oil itself has an orange tint. The colors white and orange seem to be representative of this product. If you take off the cap then there is an opening that allows big drops of oil to come out, so you will not use or lose too much product.

The formula is a combination of plant extracts, vitamins and oil. The brand prides itself for containing the unique ingredient PurCellin Oil™, which keeps the substance light and non-greasy, and allow for easier immersion of the ingredients into the skin. That sounds good to me! Other ingredients are: BotanicalsCalendula Officinalis Flower Extract (Calendula Oil), Lavandula Angustifolia Oil (Lavender Oil), Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil (Rosemary Oil), and Anthemis Nobilis Flower Oil (Chamomile Oil). VitaminsRetinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A) and Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E). Oil base: Paraffinum Liquidum, Triisononanoin, Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate, Isopropyl Myristate, Glycine Soja Oil, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, BHT, and Bisabolol. Fragrance (Rose)Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Amyl Cinnamal, Benzyl Salicylate, Citronellol, Coumarin, Eugenol, Farnesol, Geraniol, Hydroxycitronellal, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, Limonene, and Linalool.  Colour Orange: CI 26100 (Red 17). You can use the Bio Oil on a daily base and it is safe for pregnant women as well.

What I really love about Bio Oil is how versatile this product is. You do not need to use it as just an oil to rub into your skin where it is dry, uneven or has scars or stretch marks. You can also use it as a base for your makeup! What oil? Yeah! Especially if you have dry cheeks like me! All you need to do is take two drops of Bio Oil (not more!!) and warm it up to your body temperature in the palm of your hands, then softly dab it on your cheeks, smear it towards your neck, then dap whatever is left on your forehead. Or you can use it as micellair water to remove your makeup! Dilute your desired amount of Bio Oil with water.. voila.. now you can remove your makeup. You should think 50/50, so 30 ml of Bio Oil with 30 ml of water! Turn the Bio Oil into a scrub by combining it with some liquid honey and sugar! Or add some shine and care to your eyebrows and lashes by adding a bit of Bio Oil to them! It gives my eyebrows a less unruly look as well.  I mean.. there are so many more options here. If you want to hear more, then let me know!

The many uses of Bio Oil
before: no Bio Oil / after: Bio Oil applied to eyebrows

The question asked at the start still remains. Does it actually help diminish those scars and stretch marks? Does it really help against dry and uneven skin? I have tested Bio Oil on my breasts and bum, because I have stretch marks there. Sorry no pictures. I would feel awkward lol. I think the application on my body is very nice and easy, though. It is not sticky so you can wear Bio Oil either during the day or at night in bed. Did I see visible lessening in my stretch marks? Well, it was not very obvious. There may have been subtle lessening, but I must have missed it. Then again, I did not expect it to be some miracle worker that takes away all the stretch marks I have had for over a decade. What I do like is that it keeps those body parts extra smooth and it can be great as a preventive measure against stretch marks (for example, when you are pregnant). I have also used it on my face as a makeup remover or as a base before my makeup on my dry cheeks. It works well as micellair water and it keeps my dry cheeks hydrated underneath my makeup. I am really pleased with how there are a variety of ways to use Bio Oil. It is a kind of product any woman could use. You can buy Bio Oil at pharmacies in Belgium for €11,99 (60 ml) or €19,99 (125 ml). If you want to find out if it is available in your country and where exactly, then click here. It is not that expensive either because you usually only need a couple of drops of oil, even when applying it to stretch marks, so you will be using it for a long time. All in all, I am happy I got to try Bio Oil even if it does not miraculously cure me of my stretch marks ;-) Have you tried it? How would you use Bio Oil?

  1. I have never tried this product before, and I honestly get super skeptical when a product claims to lessen the appearance of stretch marks, because I have yet to find one that actually works! haha. :( I would still try this product since I'm interested in anything that could at least prevent any more stretch marks! Thanks for the review! :)

    1. I am skeptical about it too! Yeah, I will definitely continue using this.. and who knows, in the long rung it might just make a more obvious difference? You're welcome :)

  4. I'd probably use it for my cuticles and stretch marks. I did ballet when I was a kid so I have some stretch marks on my hips from all the insane stretching :-(

    1. Oh, cuticles! That's handy too. Aw, well.. I'm not sure stretch marks you've had for so long could really ever go away.. but, hey, worth a try?!

  5. I have a bottle around here somewhere, because I wanted to lessen a scar that is left from surgery back when I was 12, but it had no effect I could witness.
Apart from that I didn't want to use it during pregnancy or on my face because of the Mineral Oil, but as my skin isn't dry and I didn't get stretch marks, I obviously didn't need it there.

  6. Lekker multifunctioneel!

  12. You really are maximizing the results with this oil! Too bad it didn't do much on scars. I was at one point almost about to buy it to help with my acne scars on my cheeks but I guess I was being too skeptical. Haha.
