I'm not sure if you know, but I'm a big movie and tv show buff! Besides all the reading, researching and studying that I have to do on a daily basis, I need some off time to relax. A moment to shut off my brains and just relax. Though I end up watching so many (I always find the time somehow) that I do not remember which movies I have seen.. yikes.. or I can not find anything entertaining to watch because I have seen it all. Oh, first world problems.
My way to "escape" is by watching fun or dramatic tv shows that vary widely in genre. As long as they are entertaining. I am sure I am not the only one so I thought it would be a good idea to share some of the shows that I enjoy watching with you. As most of my readers are females, I wanted to start with five girly shows that you should be watching. I call them girly, because I think these shows really appeal to females and because all the shows have female leads and are about the trials and tribulations of their (love) life!
Jane the Virgin
When I first saw this trailer I was not completely convinced, but it did pique my interest. Jane the Virgin is about a girl named Jane who is a virgin (doh) and accidentally becomes pregnant via artificial insemination. Yes, this show definitely is as dramatic as the plot makes it out to be (such a telenovela). Then there is the cliche love triangle (team Michael)... but I can overlook that annoyance, because the humor in this show is great! My favorite bits come from the narrator and Jane's father.. Here's the teaser trailer so you have an idea what it is like:
This show is very similar to Jane the Virgin because it also feels like a telenovela (so much silly drama) and has a mainly hispanic cast. It is about five latin women, who work as maids for the scandalous rich and famous, whilst trying to accomplish their own ambitions or dreams. There is also a murder mystery involved that we, the viewers, will slowly learn more about. The first season is highly recommended because it is filled with glamour, drama and murder! The second season has finished and in June we can expect a third! Here is a preview:
The Mindy Project
Something entirely different from the previous two series is The Mindy Project. The creator of the show and main lead is Mindy. Mindy is a young obstetrics and gynecology (specializes in pregnant women, child birth, etc) doctor who works at an office filled with the quirkiest people. This is a good thing, because she herself is quite quirky too. She stands out because of her self-deprecating self-love, enormous cognizance of pop culture and her eternal conquest for cliche and romanticized love. Errr, I am not selling it.. am I? Just watch the trailer.. and let's find out if we have a similar sense of humor:
Orange is the New Black
I actually stayed away from this show for a really long time, because it did not look that interesting to me and everyone was raving about it, thus making me think it was overrated. Boy, I was wrong. This was such a fun watch with not only comedy but plenty of heartfelt drama. You really come to care about most of the women incarcerated in that prison.. even the manipulating Piper Chapman (or well, I did). Orange is the New Black tells the tale of a young woman you would not expect to see in prison. Unfortunately for her, due to circumstances she has to serve fifteen months for a crime she committed a long time ago. In prison we learn more about her past and of the other women incarcerated with her. A diverse cast that includes lots of minorities (people of color, lesbians, transgenders, etc) and does not showcase them in a very stereotypical way. Definitely worth a watch!
Hart of Dixie
The last show I am sharing with you has the least humor in it, but it is quite a girly show and surely is worth a mention. Zoey Hart, a doctor from New York, accepts to work as a general practitioner in Bluebell, Alabama (a fictional and remote Southern town) after her dream of being a heart surgeon is no longer a possibility. You can imagine life is quite different in Bluebell and people have a hard time accepting her just like she has a hard time accepting them. In a nutshell, it is about a girl rediscovering herself whilst transitioning from being a city girl to a country doctor. Need another reason to watch it? Wade. He will grow on you. Trust me.
The shows are mentioned in a random order, but my favorite out of the bunch right now is Jane the Virgin because it does not take itself too seriously, but just is silly and funny. The same could be said about The Mindy Project! Now that I am thinking about it... perhaps you might have expected Pretty Little Liars to be in here as well (because it is such a popular show), but I can not consciously recommend that show to you, because we are in season 5 right now and still not much closer to knowing who A is (that is the big mystery of the show). Even though the reveal is coming soon, I have lost all my interest in the mystery aspect of that show and only watch it for the storyline of some of the girls. That is a whole different story, though! The brand new show "Hindsight" should get a mention, because it has an interesting plot! However, I have not decided whether I think it is any good (love triangle cliche), so you should make up your own mind! Were you expecting different shows to be in here? Which girly series would you recommend to me?! And what do you think of the aforementioned tv shows?
