5 Minutes | Global MGC

Every now and then I like to shine some light on very creative or innovative young people through "5 Minutes". Now, it is time for 5 minutes with Fons van den Berg, who together with his friend Lidewij van Twillert, founded the fashion brand Global MGC (the latter is pronounced as magic).

About the Guy

Fons van den Berg is a 25 year old Industrial Design Engineer graduate from Delft University of Technology, where he met Lidewij van Twillert. He has always been interested in fashion brands, because everyone has their own specific brand they love, own, and wear. Everyone has an opinion on clothing. Fons came up with the idea to create special, but wearable, clothing. He spoke and brainstormed about his ideas with Lidewij, who has lots of fabrics originating from different countries all over the world. This led to Global MGC.

Global MGC

A small fashion brand with the ambition to make wearable clothing (so far for men) that is inspired by cultures and fabrics from all over the world. It is a way to bring global freshness into your daily live. Global MGC garments are made for people that are young in mind and strive for uniqueness, fun and comfort. The first product was a denim shirt with details made of fabric from the Netherlands to Ghana to India. Currently, there is a small collection of almost 50 shirts in nine different styles and four different sizes. All the clothing is limited, which ensures the uniqueness of each piece.

The Process

Fons travelled to Rabat, Morroco, where he started looking for studios and factories with knowledge in denim. When he found a proper factory he was informed of all the technical things, such as denim type, buttons, threads, etc. It was a long road, but well worth it. Some advice by Fons:
"My motto became: die trying. When you have an idea and drive to create something, just try it. Make sure you can communicate the energy about your idea and people will always help you! You are capable of doing more things than you expect even when you don't have any specific knowledge about the industry, just like me." - Fons van den Berg

The Future

Global MGC plans to sell the first products and design new products for next summer. The clothing is sold in Delft, but you can also buy it via www.globalmgc.com! They are always looking for interesting fabrics, so they also encourage their family, friends, and fans to bring back fabrics from their travels. The goal is to gradually grow into a full brand with a complete collection (for women as well) including different types of products (not only denim), all in the philosophy of Global MGC.
