As requested by some of my readers... a post about what to do in Antwerp. I am sure you did not have this in mind, but I still feel like sharing it with you all. I have never gone to a zoo before (I have to an park for just birds or monkeys or an aquarium museum (you know, museum of fishies) but never to an actual zoo filled with all kinds of animals, so I was curious about it.
Right in the city center, located next to the Central Station, you will find the animal park. It was pretty big and there are all kinds of different animals that you can see. I found it an interesting experience, but I think it is a bit weird to see animals in their restricted area living a "wild life" whilst hundreds of men, women and children watch them (myself included). Ack. As long as they are being treated well, I suppose. That is what matters in the end. What do you think?
Did you know the people in Antwerp call the zoo a "Zoo"? I was just to it being called a "dierentuin", so that was new. The word comes from old-Greek "ζῷον", which means animal. And here I thought it was just a word used in the English vocabulary. I learn new things every day. Totally not the point I wanted to make, though. Oh, look at that cute little monkey above, btw. That mustache!
I found these interesting looking Okapi's to be a bit sad. I do not know if they are solitary creatures or not, but they all were just standing a bit by themselves... with their long tongue coming out every now and then. I should probably stop applying my human feelings and logic to animals, because that is why I felt a bit sad for them. The okapi live in a Moorish temple that dates back to 1865, beautiful designs, right?!
It was all fascinating to see and I am glad I finally had the experience of going to a zoo. I had all these different emotions and ideas from just looking at the many different animals. I did not think lions were that impressive... then again, I was not getting all up-close and personal with them.. ;-) Have you visited many animal parks? What do you think of the creatures in the park? And what is your favorite animal? Oh, should you wish to visit the Antwerp Zoo, then have a looksie here.
