Halloween Costume Ideas

Now you all probably don't know this about me yet, but I'm a big fan of Halloween! Unfortunately, we never celebrated it when growing up as it wasn't a very popular holiday in the Netherlands. It still isn't but it's definitely growing more popular, which is why I've been throwing Halloween parties ever since I've been legal! Uhh, what does that have to do with it?

Well, just that I had the freedom to do so! Quite important, you'd think! For those of you who don't know yet, Halloween takes place on October 31st and I hope to help with the spreading of this fun event (giving you a reason to dress-up and party) by sharing it with you, my dear reader! Which is why I'm starting it off with one of the most important things when attending or hosting a Halloween party: the costume!

There are so many ways that you can go with for the costumes, but most girls tend to go for either scary or sexy, or a combination of both! I tend to go for more sexy  than scary and a bit more extravagant because that's the fun of of! There's really a lot I would like to share so I've categorized the costume ideas into "typical costumes", "historical figures" and "pop culture". To make sure this post doesn't become too long, I am only sharing two costume ideas of each category. If you're interested in more ideas, just send me a message or e-mail!

Typical Costumes
This doesn't necessarily mean they are boring and suck, but it does mean they've been tried before and might lack originality. Though I don't think there's anything wrong with that, because I always go for easy and as affordable as possible (read: out of my closet) outfits! Besides the two I am mentioning below, other typical costumes are: the pirate, the werewolf, the school girl, the cheerleader, the witch, etc.

The Vampire
In mythology and popular culture there have been many versions of what a vampire looks like. Count Dracula probably being the most famous one, so surely a costume to go for. Besides him you have different looking vampires depending on what sub-culture or time period they belong to!

General guidelines:
- stick to a type of vampire;
- add blue contacts;
- buy fake blood to show you're a bloodsucker;
- choose black (combined with red) and form fitting clothing, perhaps a long black dress;

The Zombie
This undead creature has come "alive" many times on All Hallow's Eve! You can easily become one as it's less about the clothing and more about the make-up! Let's just share some visual examples for now, next time I will give you more information on how to get the look!
School girl Zombie: Source
Zombie Bride: source

General guidelines:
- Go for a stereotypical person e.g. school girl, bride, athlete, etc;
- Pick clothing items you don't mind throwing away;
- Rip clothing into pieces and add blood;
- Add a lot of make-up and blood!

Historical Figures
These types of costumes can be quite fun because it's interesting to see how many people will recognize you, but that could also depend on how good your costume actually is! Characters that have had an impact on world history is the way to go! Some historical figures may include: Frida Kahlo, The Cavewoman, Marilyn Monroe, Marie Antoinette, etc.

Cleopatra
The last queen of Ancient Egypt has made quite an impression on world history, making her an easily recognizable character to dress up as! Yes, this costume idea could just as easily fall into the "typical costume" ideas as it has been done before! Cleopatra has a darker complexion so this is also nice for darker-skinned girls looking for a costume idea closer to their skin color.

General guidelines:
- wear a long white dress
- add golden and blue accents/accessories to it, e.g. a belt, cape, head piece and armcuffs

Pocahontas
I'm sure everyone knows, at least of the Disney version, of Pocahontas! A native-american princess who married a European man. Certainly a historical figure! Just like Cleopatra, Pocahontas has a darker complexion, so this costume would definitely work for me!

source
General guidelines:
- wear earth-toned clothing, e.g. a top and a skirt or a dress;
- add a belt to your outfit and tie feathers and beads to it;
- wear shoes that have native-american influences;
- wear your hair loose (the Disney version) or in two pigtails with feathers.

Pop Culture
Nothing is more recognizable (and popular) than pop culture! These costumes often give you the option to be more original and choose a modern character. You can think of anything: from celebrities, to characters from a tv-show or movie. Back in the day you had "Sonny & Cher", but now you can think of fun ideas such as: Daft Punk, Paris Hilton, Blair from Gossip Girl, any kind of super hero or...

Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)
This frizzy-haired & bossy know-it-all will surely be a fun character to dress up as! She comes in many outfits, but her most famous one is in her Gryffindor robes with her books and wand by her side. Often accompanied by Harry and Ron, so might be fun look to try with friends? Or add Draco Malfoy instead, I'd love that!

source: left & right

General guidelines:
- find black long robes and/or a grey skirt and top;
- add a gryffindor-colored tie to your outfit;
- add a wand to your look;
- wear Mary Jane shoes.

Buffy (the Vampire Slayer)
Yes, I know this isn't current anymore but this is my favorite tv-show ever and I certainly do love Buffy Summers. Unfortunately, I am not caucasian nor am I blonde.. but who knows, maybe I will have to settle for Faith or Kendra. So, Buffy has worn a lot of outfits but she became well-known for her leather pants.. Her most famous outfit being when she decided to "play the game" according to Faith's rule, style included! So only one picture needed!

General guidelines:
- wear red leather pants;
- wear a simple black shirt;
- optional: add a black leather jacket;
- wear a claddagh ring and a cross;
- don't forget your stake.

Well, there you have it.. some costume ideas I felt like sharing with you. I hope that I have aided in the picking of a new outfit or inspired you a little. What are your favorite Halloween costumes? Do you go for scary, sexy, both or something entirely different? If you're not celebrating Halloween yet... what's stopping you?!

  2. Leuk artikel!

  5. I'm going to a party that has the "dead circus" theme. This year I'll be going as a mime clown, but very bloody and very dead. ;)
    I wanted to do the zombie thing, with latex and the whole peeling off face thing, but man latex smells sooo bad! The make up I'm doing now is a combination of wax and latex, which is better than latex all over your face.

  9. Ik vind het kostuum van Cleopatra het allermooist, maar als die-hard Harry Potter fan moet ik wellicht eigenlijk als Hermelien, ik denk alleen niet dat André het ziet zitten om als Harry Potter te gaan;-)

  19. I think I should dress as Batman but an indian batman wouldn't work. Dressing up as a character from a novel would be too out there and no one would get it. Best to dress up like a famous neuroscientist. Which would be better Cajal or Sacks?
