Making colored sugar

Colored sugar can be added to cakes, cake pops, cupcakes, any dessert you can think of really (though I doubt that all those combination will also work, but that is where the fun of playing and trying comes in). Unfortunately, they are not easy to find in stores and when I do, they are so expensive.

Instead of buying colored sugar in the stores, you can make it yourself! It's quite easy. All you need is:

  • granulated white sugar
  • food coloring (liquid or gel)
  • plastic gloves
I insist on the last item because see what happened to my hand (also way more hygienic):

Not so smart.

Anyways, on to the process of making colored sugar. It's very easy as I said before. You just pour as much sugar as you want in a cup, add just a slight drop of liquid or gel food coloring and start mixing the two with your hand covered in a plastic glove. Once the color sets you can decide to make it softer/lighter by adding more sugar or make it darker by adding more coloring. That is all!

  1. you put the sugar and food colouring in a zip-lock bag and mix it through the plastic...saves your hands from the colour
